History · the dated spine

There is no inventor of agentic finance. There is a pile-up.

Thirty years of multi-agent research, one unused HTTP status code, four standards that landed in sixteen months, and a thousand tokens in between. Dated, sourced, and separated from the marketing.

Direct answer Nobody invented agentic finance. It is a pile-up of four rails that landed within sixteen months of each other, on top of a field that was thirty years old. Agents could use tools by 2024, find each other by 2025, prove a name by late 2025 and pay without an account from May 2025 — and almost nothing used all four at once. It still does not.

Software that acts for someone is as old as a cron job. Software that negotiates with other software and settles in money needed three things that did not exist together until 2025: a way for models to use tools, a way for strangers' agents to find each other, and a way to pay without opening an account. The words arrived in the wrong order. The rails arrived late. The tokens arrived early and often died.

This is the order that actually happened.

The spine, dated

1 · Before the word (1990s–2016)

Multi-agent systems were already a field when most of today's protocol authors were in school. Michael Wooldridge, Nick Jennings and a generation of AAMAS papers treated an agent as a program with some autonomy, a social ability and a goal — running on a campus cluster, not on Base.

HTTP 402 Payment Required was reserved in the status-code table and left blank. The web got ads and cards instead. That empty code is why Coinbase could name a protocol x402 thirty years later without inventing a new verb.

Finance automation grew up separately: rules engines, high-frequency shops, and Yu'e Bao in 2013 sweeping idle Alipay balances into a money-market fund. That last one is proto-agentic in the boring sense — a system acting on a balance without a new human decision every night. It was not a model and it was not a wallet. It is still the right ancestor if the question is when did money start moving because software decided.

2 · The first crypto agents (2017–2021)

Fetch.ai put the phrase autonomous economic agent inside a company. Humayun Sheikh, Toby Simpson and Thomas Hain started in Cambridge in 2017. The Almanac registry, later Agentverse, and the AEA and uAgents stack are the oldest continuous attempt in crypto to make agents discoverable and payable. What the Almanac actually counts →

David Minarsch ran multi-agent systems at Fetch, then left to found Valory and help birth Olas — co-owned off-chain services that touch a chain when they must. If you want a clean academic-to-product line, it is Wooldridge → Fetch MAS → Olas, not a 2024 coin. Olas, Valory and the Mech Marketplace →

DeFi, meanwhile, automated pools, not persons. A vault strategy is an agent in the Yu'e Bao sense. It is not an agent in the ERC-8004 sense. Mixing those two is how AgentFi TVL slides became fiction. The four nouns people use as one →

3 · Models learn to use tools (2023–early 2024)

Researchers spent 2023 arguing about the definition. In March 2024, Andrew Ng cut the knot at Sequoia: stop asking whether something is an agent, and call systems agentic on a spectrum. The adjective escaped the talk and colonised the decks.

What changed technically was not the adjective. It was tool use — models that could call APIs, browse and write files. That is the precondition for an agent that works online for a person, as opposed to one that talks.

4 · The token year (late 2024)

October 2024 is when crypto decided agents were a ticker.

Shaw Walters shipped Eliza, a TypeScript framework that let a character file live on X and Discord and, with plugins, touch a chain. Over lunch with daos.fun the project took the name ai16z — a joke that became a multi-billion-dollar market cap by January 2025, and a lawsuit and a dead token by August 2026. The framework outlived the ticker. That split is the whole 2024 lesson. What survived when the token died →

Virtuals Protocol, already a PathDAO-era company under Jansen Teng and Wee Kee Tiew, relaunched on Base as a place to capitalise an agent: NFT, ERC-20, bonding curve, and later a job protocol. Personality tokens and real service agents still share the same factory. Virtuals, ACP and the job cycle →

Anthropic released MCP in November 2024. Quietly, this mattered more than any agent coin. Agents needed a standard way to touch tools, and MCP became that way.

By year-end 2024 you could launch an agent in an afternoon and get a chart. You still could not pay a random API with a header, prove a name on-chain under one ERC, or give the bot a valet key instead of the seed phrase.

5 · The rail year (2025)

Four standards landed close enough together that 2026 can pretend they were a plan.

04

9 April — A2A

Google announces Agent2Agent with fifty-plus enterprise names, then donates it to the Linux Foundation on 23 June. MCP stays agent-to-tool; A2A is agent-to-agent.

05

6 May — x402

Erik Reppel, Nemil Dalal and Dan Kim give HTTP 402 a body: pay in a stablecoin, retry with a header, settle through an optional facilitator.

05

7 May — Pectra

EIP-7702 activates. An EOA can point at smart-account code and keep its address. Session keys stop being a slide — and the original key still exists.

08

13 August — ERC-8004

De Rossi, Crapis, Ellis and Reppel post Trustless Agents. Small on purpose: an NFT identity, a feedback registry, a validation registry.

On 23 September 2025 Cloudflare and Coinbase said they would put x402 in a foundation, and Cloudflare wired 402 into its Agents SDK and MCP hosts the same day. The full x402 story →

By Christmas 2025 the stack this site measures existed on paper: name (8004), talk (MCP and A2A), pay (x402 and USDC), policy (7702). Almost nobody used all four at once. That is still true.

6 · The join year (2026)

January — 8004 registries deployed widely through CREATE2. Explorers started counting hundreds of thousands of names. Working endpoints stayed scarce. Why a name is not a worker →

February — agentic wallets and AgentKit in wide circulation. Virtuals pushing ACP as a full job cycle rather than only a launchpad. Bankr-class runtimes selling the idea that an agent's trading fees should pay its own inference bill. The fee-to-compute loop, and what we can actually walk →

April — the Linux Foundation takes x402. The date 4/02 is not an accident.

July — the x402 Foundation goes operational with forty members. The premier list is payments, not crypto Twitter: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Stripe, Adyen, AWS, Google, Circle, Cloudflare, Shopify, Solana Foundation. That list is why x402 is a rail and not a Coinbase feature.

August — Shaw Walters calls the Eliza token dead. The industry learns, again, that a framework is not a foundation treasury.

September — the graph of machine money is still mostly Base USDC tickets, a few vaults, a minority of 7702-delegated agent wallets, and a large minority of 8004 names that have already changed hands. What that looks like today, measured →

7 · Who started “agentic finance” as a phrase

Nobody owns it. The honest answer is a relay:

  • Fetch named the economic agent, in 2017.
  • Andrew Ng named the spectrum, in 2024.
  • Google named the agent handshake.
  • Coinbase named the payment.
  • MetaMask, the Ethereum Foundation, Google and Coinbase named the passport.
  • Pectra named the valet key.
  • The market named a thousand tokens.

Someone still has to count which of those tokens is a funded wallet with a counterparty. That is the only job this site claims. We did not write MCP, A2A, x402 or ERC-8004, and we do not pretend to. The people who did →

8 · What “building it now” actually means

The people writing production code in 2026 are mostly not launching tickers. They are implementing 7702 session policies inside wallet vendors, running x402 facilitators, parsing 8004 JSON that is often empty, hosting MCP servers that charge a cent, settling jobs that have an evaluator, and trying not to put the master key in the prompt.

That is a smaller room than the narrative. It is the room that will still be here when the next personality token dies.

9 · What to remember when the charts get loud

Five objects that get called the same thing, and are not.
ObjectWhat it actually proves
A registrationA badge was issued. Not that anyone is home.
A paymentWriting. Somebody's wallet moved money to somebody else.
A valet keyA policy. Bounded spend, not custody.
A vault balanceParked cash. Idle, by definition.
A market capA crowd.

Agentic finance begins when those are joined, not when any one of them trends. The join, specified →

Questions people actually ask

Who invented agentic finance?
No one person or company. Fetch.ai named the autonomous economic agent in 2017, Andrew Ng popularised agentic as a spectrum in March 2024, Google published A2A in April 2025, Coinbase published x402 in May 2025, and ERC-8004 was authored by Marco De Rossi, Davide Crapis, Jordan Ellis and Erik Reppel in August 2025. The phrase describes the pile-up, not a product.
What is the difference between MCP and A2A?
MCP is agent-to-tool: a standard handshake so a model can call files, browsers and APIs. A2A is agent-to-agent: an HTTP protocol so agents from different vendors can delegate tasks to each other. They are complementary, and ERC-8004 registration files list both as service endpoints.
Why is HTTP 402 relevant to AI agents?
Status code 402 Payment Required was reserved in the 1990s and left without a defined meaning for thirty years. Coinbase's x402, published on 6 May 2025, is the first widely adopted meaning for it: a server answers 402 with payment requirements, the client signs a stablecoin authorisation, a facilitator settles, and the resource is returned. No account and no session.
Did the ai16z token failing mean the Eliza framework failed?
No, and conflating the two is the standard error. Shaw Walters said in August 2026 that the token was dead and the foundation was closing after a lawsuit drained the treasury, while continuing to build the software. The framework taught much of the industry how to ship an agent; the ticker is a separate, cautionary object.
Is a registration count a count of working AI agents?
No. A registration is a name issued on-chain, and it can be minted in bulk and resold. On our own sampling of Base ERC-8004 registrations, the share whose declared endpoint actually answers is in the single digits, and roughly a quarter of all registrations have already changed hands at least once. Liveness has to be measured separately from issuance.
